The normal timeframe for coursework before advancing to candidacy and dissertation research is three years, one of which will be spent at the University of Leipzig.

Up to 12 units of major coursework can be transferred into the PhD program. For students who completed their MA in the German Studies Department, GER 579 can be transferred from the MA. In the case of an internal minor, at least one course in the minor must be taken at the University of Arizona. At least 30 units must be completed in residence at the University of Arizona, of which three credits may be from the dissertation.
