Featured Alumna: Prof. Barbara Hales

Prof. Barbara Hales (Associate Professor of History and Humanities, University of Houston at Clear Lake) completed her Masters in German at the University of Arizona in 1990. She then continued on to a PhD course of study in Comparative Cultural and Literary Studies (University of Arizona) and wrote her dissertation under the direction of Prof. Barbara Kosta (UA Department of German Studies). Hales' dissertation is entitled Dark Mirror: Constructions of the Criminal Femme Fatale in Weimar Film and Hollywood Film Noir.

Prof. Hales' publications focus on film history, cultural studies, and intellectual history of the Weimar Republic. Her current research interests include Women and the Occult in Weimar Germany, Early Weimar Film, and Representations of the Holocaust in Cinema. Hales has received research grants from the Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst. She teaches courses on European Women Filmmakers, the Vietnam War in Film, US American cinema, and Holocaust literature.
