Germany Meets the US – “Representations of German in Tucson” Project

As part of a week of events sponsored by the Germany Embassy around the topic “Germany Meets the US” German language students at the University of Arizona participated in a project “Representations of German in Tucson” during the first week of October. The aim of the project was to document representations of German throughout the city of Tucson—for example in signs or menus, architecture, symbols, and depictions of historical figures. Students documented these sites using virtual maps and by creating postcards with images and brief descriptions of why this site seemed meaningful to the student as an example Gernmanness in Tucson.

Using prizes provided from the German Embassy, the Department of German Studies held competitions for the best two postcards in each of the participating classes and for the class with the most pins in the virtual map. The students of “Encounters in German Language a Culture”—the fifth semester course in the curriculum won the class competition with 40 sites found. The winners of the postcard competitions are listed in full below.

The “Representations of German in Tucson” Project was designed by Lydia Heiss, a PhD candidate in Transcultural German Studies at UA, who first got the idea of asking students to collect German representations in the local landscape when working with a former fellow graduate student Diane Richardson (now an instructor at West Point Academy) and a Tucson German teacher Kerry Marnell, who is also an alumna of the German Studies Program.
