The American Literary Translators Association (ALTA) meets in Oakland on October 6-9, 2016 for the 39th time, after meeting in Tucson last year. UA students of literary translation Judith Menzl (MA Program in German Studies), Patrick Ploschnitzki (PhD Program in Transcultural German Studies), Tara Taylor (German Studies major), and Prairie Markussen (Graduate Program in Rhetoric, Composition, and the Teaching of English) have organized and will present a panel discussion entitled "Greenhorns and Old-Timers: Crossing Generations in Translation," which will be moderated by UA Prof. David Gramling  (German Studies). The panel will discuss what it means—philosophically, logistically, linguistically, and professionally—to "become" a translator, and what the experience of delving into the legacy of literary translation feels like as a beginner. Veteran translators are invited to reflect on their experiences at the outset of their career as well. Come join us in Oakland for ALTA '39!
