Art is one of the most powerful mediums for expressing deep feelings, painful emotions and traumas. Käthe Kollwitz was one of the most ingenious German Expressionist artists of the early 20th century. Through her prints, including some that are in the UAMA permanent collection, Kollwitz channeled trauma and suffering into the creation of works both haunting and beautiful. This free virtual talk – presented by Dr. Albrecht Classen, University Distinguished Professor of German Studies, and Makenna Lockwood, UAMA Intern and 2021 UArizona graduate – will introduce us to this outstanding artist and facilitate a discussion of her work.
