With specialty camp programs ranging from Bone Camp to Fencing to Java Programming , AYU focuses on a variety of academic and enrichment areas that will spark curiosity and inspire future college and career plans.
There are no speed limits when it comes to learning, and learning German is easier than you think! Just consider all of the words you already know: Hand, Haus, Hallo, Kindergarten, Auto, Willkommen, and, of course, Fahrvergnügen. Through German games, movies, art activities, cooking, and listening to German popular music, you will learn about German culture and gain basic German language skills. Students will also explore theater, discover German expressionist painters at the UA Museum of Art, and listen to special guest speakers and musicians from the community. Instructor: Sabine Koehler-Curry is currently a student in the German Studies Master Program at the University of Arizona, and she has a particular interest in learning about cultural competence acquisition. She has enjoyed outreach activities with the Tucson K-12 school community, teaching about German culture and historical events. As an instructor, Sabine has volunteered at UA School of Art Culture Education Division workshops, which focus on engaging children in contemporary art-making processes. She also teaches German to undergraduate students in the UA basic language program. Teaching language, culture, and art in a different setting from the traditional classroom is another interest of hers and she looks forward to the opportunity to teach German culture and the German language in combination with culture-related activities.
Sabine received her B.A. in German Studies and Art History from the University of Arizona. After working for worldwide cultural institutions such as Frankfurt Fair (Messe Frankfurt GmbH, Germany), the Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt, Germany, and The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York City, she decided to round up her knowledge with an academic background. Sabine received a teaching certificate from the University of Arizona Teaching Center last year and received her M.A. in German Studies and a second B.A. in Art Education in the Spring of 2011.
