English Abstract: In this session, we discuss the factors that affect the function and strength of cross-linguistic influence in vocabulary acquisition and lexical production resulting in certain errors in the speech of second language (L2) and third language (L3) learners. We present the analysis of a corpus of 866 lexical errors and some word finding problems of 100 Mexican learners of German (L3) at the novice proficiency level and English (L2) at the intermediate/advanced levels. Using the Parasitic Model of Vocabulary Acquisition as the theoretical framework (Hall & Ecke, 2003; Ecke, 2015), we describe the initial stages of L3 vocabulary acquisition and discuss how we see and treat learners’ lexical errors resulting from this process.
