Assessment is an essential part of foreign language instruction at every level. While assessment generally reflects the dominant approach and curriculum of a foreign language program, recent research indicates that it is also worthwhile to consider supplementary and external means of assessment. Such forms of assessment would include those regarded as in line with a literacy-based approach to foreign language instruction, which may offer great potential for emphasizing the transcultural competence of foreign language learners. These issues shall all be addressed in this talk, as well as the impact that literacy-based assessment may have on individual, institutional and broader socio-cultural contexts of foreign language instruction.
