As we near the end of the spring 2012 semester, the Graduate Enrichment Program (GEP) is just gearing up. Beginning after Spring Break and lasting till the second week of April we will be holding 4 GEP Workshops. Three of these Workshops are new and one is a repeat of a popular Workshop from last semester (the Internal Review Board (IRB) Investigator Workshop).

1. Graduate and Professional Student Council (GPSC) Travel Grant Application Workshop will be held on Thursday March 22nd 2012 from 2:00-4:00pm. The room is TBA. This workshop is intended for graduate and professional students who are planning to apply or reapply for a GPSC travel grant in an upcoming grant round. There will be a brief presentation about travel grant guidelines and an opportunity for peer-to-peer evaluation. The Travel Grants Director as well as past grant awardees/judges will be there to answer any questions and to assist students in writing a strong travel grant application. Please come to the workshop with enough material written to partake in a peer evaluation session. (Note: Attending this workshop does not guarantee you a Travel Grant award). Registration will be limited to 35 people. Light refreshments will be served.

2. Grant Writing Basics Workshop will be held on Tuesday March 27th 2012 from 8:00am-12:00pm in the Tucson Room (SUMC). This Workshop is based on knowledge culled from both the academic and non-profit worlds. It covers basic concepts to get you started on the road to funding your graduate projects. You will leave this workshop with information on how to consider a funding match, set reasonable funding expectations and find the resources to help you in the process. Designed to be interactive, this workshop is especially helpful for those confused or intimidated by the idea of translating their research goals for potential funders but eager to begin building those relationships. Join us and get your “short list” of how to write for the grant-making world. Refreshments and encouragement provided. Registration will be limited to 50 people. Light refreshments will be served.

3. The Perl Workshop will take place over two Sundays back-to-back starting April 1st 2012 to April 8th 2012 from 9:00am-1:00pm, Room TBA. This Workshop will teach you about the Perl computer programming and how you can use it in your research projects. You will be required to have a laptop and the software downloaded on your laptop before the Workshop starts (if you are a Mac or Linux user it is already downloaded but if not this website might be useful: http://www.perl.org/get.html). Registration will be limited to 50 people. A light brunch will be served during the break on each day.

4. The Internal Review Board (IRB) Investigator Workshop will be held on two different days (but the material will be the exact same). On Monday April 2nd 2012 the Workshop will be offered at 2:00-3:30pm in SUMC#411 and on Tuesday April 3rd 2012 at 10:00-11:30am in SUMC#411 (Career Services Room). Please sign up for only one of these two days as they are the same presentation just meant to help everyone with different schedules attend one of the two Workshops. Feel free to bring your own brown bag lunch for this event, but no food will actually be served since the Workshop is less than 2 hours long.
