In 2014, Dr. Romedio Schmitz-Esser published a comprehensive study on the corpse in the Middle Ages (second edition 2016). With the help of grant support, Dr. Albrecht Classen and former PhD student Carolin Radtke carried out the task of translating the major tome. The Corpse in the Middle Ages: Embalming, Cremating, and the Cultural Construction of the Dead Body, comprising 780 pages, was published in 2020, with Harvey Miller (Turnhout, Belgium). Whatever you might want to know about the treatment of and approach to corpses in the Middle Ages, this book surely has it!
