Professor Classen was recently elected Vice President/President Elect of the Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association (RMMLA). RMMLA is a regional organization, one of six independent branches of the Modern Language Association of America. The non-profit organization promotes the study and teaching of all languages, literatures, and cultures. The organization’s annual regional conference attracts scholars from around the world. Prof. Classen would like to express his special thanks to the College of Humanities Dean, Mary Wildner-Bassett, as her support was essential for Prof. Classen to run for that position. Professor Classen will represent the entire University of Arizona while serving a 3 year rotational term as Vice President, President, and Past President; each office with slightly different duties.

Professor Classen has also been reelected as President of the Arizona Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of German (AATG). The organization is for “advocating the study of the German language, literatures and cultures within a diverse American society.” The organization is a resource for all levels of German educators. Professor Classen is responsible for organizing the Arizona chapter’s semi-annual meetings and running the chapter, serving as the liaison person to the national headquarters of the AATG. German is being taught at high schools throughout Tucson and in some after school programs to elementary students by University of Arizona German students.
