In a recent feature by the College of Humanities, Dr. Janice McGregor, an Associate Professor in the Department of German Studies, discussed the significance of study abroad programs for language students. In the article, Dr. McGregor noted that study abroad experiences provide a unique platform for students to engage with multilingualism and gain more confidence through playful language experimentation with peers.

According to Dr. McGregor, who has led summer trips with students in the Arizona Summer Study in Leipzig program and conducted research on student health and well-being in the context of study abroad, simple acts like getting acknowledged as a regular somewhere can foster a deep sense of belonging, which positively impacts the travel and language learning experiences of students. Additionally, students receive feedback from their peers and instructors, which enhances their language learning and helps them navigate the complexities of a new culture.
