Teaching and Tutoring Adult Language Learners with Refugee and Immigrant Backgrounds: A Practical Introduction
Are you currently volunteering with or hoping to volunteer with families with refugee backgrounds? Are you a student considering interning or doing community engagement with a refugee resettlement organization? Would you like to learn about teaching tools for working with learners who are beginning literacy and language learners? Come join us and other volunteers for a FREE, interactive training!
The training will offer discussion and teaching strategies for helping adults develop oral, reading, and writing skills. The training, which focuses on teaching beginning-level language learners, addresses refugee resettlement, culture, literacy development, trauma/resilience, and teaching strategies. The training is intended for anyone volunteering or wishing to volunteer with adult language learners with immigrant or refugee backgrounds.
All students and faculty at the University of Arizona are welcome to attend. Volunteers who teach or tutor beginning-level language learners with refugee or immigrant backgrounds will especially benefit from the training.

Trainings are FREE and will take place on campus in the Learning Service Building (LSB) room 107, the East Asian Studies conference room.
We would love you attend the entire training but understand if you need to step out for class. Please let us know if you have a scheduling conflict and need to miss part of the training.
University of Arizona graduate students Amanda Snell and Jenna A. Altherr Flores will offer the trainings in collaboration with the Kate Van Roekel (ELAA Teacher Education and Training Coordinator, Literacy Connects) and Lissa Fogel (Advanced Program Coordinator, Pima Community College Refugee Education Program). The trainings are funded by a UA College of Humanities research grant.
