Encounters with people who had different understandings of what is considered polite sparked her interest in the topic of politeness. Her research now focuses on politeness and impoliteness in communication and cross-cultural interactions, both in literary texts and everyday life. She is especially interested in how ideas of politeness have changed across cultures and historical periods, as well as how they are understood in today’s world.
